Units are customizable, with different perks to choose from and researchable armor and weapons to equip. Spells can have effects in tactical combat, the strategic citybuilding/exploration layer, or both. Sovereigns and heroes can select one of 5 character classes, with some shared skills. Gameplay mainly consists of moving your Sovereign around with their army to explore goodie huts, do quests, and kill monsters. The citybuilding is somewhat interesting, as you choose one of three paths (Fort, City, or Conclave) and it levels up as it gains population. It’s a fantasy setting, with lots of randomness. I’ve often had that same feeling while playing Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes. Star Ruler 2 gave me a sort of “too much sweets all at once” effect where the game was so stimulating it felt a little overwhelming. There’s also colony development, but I haven’t got in to that yet. Ships come in many basic designs with typed hardpoints that you can outfit with a variety of fairly well-balanced weapons. You pilot one ship yourself and give your fleet orders, similar to mechwarrior. The basic gameplay loop consists of doing missions, buying and selling trade goods, exploring, and engaging in space combat. Recently I’ve been playing Starsector, a sandbox space exploration/combat/building game similar to the “X” series, except bird’s-eye view, enhanced retro graphics, and more emphasis on building a fleet to follow you around. Gameplay is mainly about building your custom fleets and using them in tactical pause-able realtime battles. Colony management is practically nonexistent. AI can put the pressure on, so pick a difficulty you’re comfortable with. Sword of the Stars (the original) has a lot of ship design options, not quite like SR2 but there are lots of cool weapons to play with. Created by /u/Kryogenetics, it's a collage of some of the 4X genre's greatest games: Endless Legend, Civilization, Endless Space and Galactic Civilizations. If you have any questions about the rules or need clarification please do not hesitate to message the moderators and ask!.Please do not post subsequent episodes or parts.
